  1. First things first, you need to get a Visa to enter the country.  Australia has many different types of Visa.  Some of the basic ones are:

Visitor visa. This would NOT allow you to work.

Working Holiday Visa. This would allow you to work for a short time whilst holidaying also.

Resident Visa. This can take up to 2 years to process, but then allows you to stay here for as long as you wish as a Permanent resident, and then lead to Citizenship if you wish.

457 Long term Visa.  This allows you to work for up to 4 years, but you need to be sponsored by an employer.

  2. you must qualify to immigrate to Australia, you need to be a skilled worker in a field Australia needs and you must pass a points test

list of occupations accepted for skilled migration

    http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121...

    points test

  3. Immigration to Australia is restricted to people with skills and experience in occupations in which workers are in short supply here and they must also pass a points test and meet health and character requirements. If you're a couple with kids, only one partner needs to qualify on the skill front and they will be allowed to bring the other partner and their dependent children. So your first step is to see if either of you has one of our required skills.

Your occupation must appear on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL). Here it is:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121...

If your job is on the SOL, check out the short list of occupations in the most demand (you score higher for them and get priority processing). That's the MODL: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-s...

If your job is on the SOL and/or MODL, check out the Australian skill recognition requirements:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/a-z.htm#a

    Now for the points test:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-s...

    The character requirements:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/characte...

Everything else, including costs can be found elsewhere on the website: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/index.htm...

The job market in Australia is very bouyant, particularly for SOL/MODL jobs. It will take 12 months or more (unless your job is on the MODL) to process your application which gives plenty of time to arrange work and to decide where you should be living.

Our main job search websites are:

    http://www.seek.com.au/

    http://www.careerone.com.au/

    http://jobsearch.gov.au/default.aspx

And depending on your occupation, there may be specialist sites as well.

Stay out of the expensive clutches of migration agents. They are unnecessary and cannot get you a visa any faster, nor can they get you a visa that would otherwise be unavailable to you.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  4. You should look at this website http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/index.ht...

It appears to have the information you require specific to your needs (which you havent explained here in any detail)

    Good luck

  5. It depends on a lot of factors and if I started explaining everything I would probably be accused of spamming. I agree the government website can be very confusing so if you wish send me a message and I will see how I can help you. Basic things I need to know are the ages of you, your wife and children? Also how many children? Next have you or your wife any skills or qualifications?
