I live just over 6 miles from my job. On a bike how long would you estimate it would take me to get there? I drive a big SUV and gas is starting to add up. I live in Columbia, SC so the weather is decent most days. I am in pretty decent shape. I do not currently own a bike so before I make the investment I am going to make sure 6 miles of pedaling will be time effective. Thanks. Any advice on some bike types/brands to look at will also be appreciated. I know nothing about bikes. Thanks again.

  1. I second the vote for allowing an hour, this should give you time to secure your bike and tidy yourself up for your work day.  In addition to looking at alternative routes to the one you drive for your bike, you might also want to alter your time a tad...getting ahead of the car traffic in the morning or behind it in the evening.

The earlier suggestion for joining a bike club might just be your connection for not only getting great info on what kind of bike you should purchase, but you might just find one you can  borrow or buy used.

My other suggestion is build up your mileage over a week or two and to ride the route you plan to use on the weekend..then maybe a couple of days back to back and then build it up to five days.  I envy your having 6 miles...I drive 35 miles to work and am trying to figure out ways to bike part both for fitness and to save $$.  Best of luck to you and happy riding.

  2. 6 Miles is quite a bit for a non rider  but after about a week and a lot of cramps I would guess about half an hour +/- 10 min.

The best way to tell is borrow a bike on a off work day and ride it then you will know how hard it is and how long it takes.

A scooter is a second option to but try the bike its good for you

  3. First off, way to go on thinking about riding a bike to work!!

As far as how long that will take, I would allow myself an hour, at least the first time. Commuting is so different from recreational cycling.  You've got traffic, lots of stop signs, stop lights ect.  I generally lose at least 5mph off my normal long milage distance time...and my commute is only 8 miles!!

If I can offer any adive.  I don't know your normal commute, but my route to work via car vs bike is completley different.  Research it well and drive it a few times.  Since your new to the sport maybe join your local bike club and talk with people in your area to map out the best (aka low traffic) route.

About picking bikes you should just go to your local bike shop and talk with them.  They will likely do you a fantastic job.

  4. Times can differ greaty from person to person, I'd just try riding to your work some day that you don't have to worry about being late, and time yourself so you know when to leave on a work day.

  5. If you can average your speed to equal 60 mph then it will take you only 10 minutes!!

  6. I live 6 miles from work exactly. It takes me about 35 mins. It would most likely be in the 35-45 min range for you.
