  2. It is an optical illusion but it has NOTHING to do with refracting of light around the atmosphere. The moon when on the horizon is measurably equal in size to the moon when high in the sky. The illusion is one of perception in the brain, and no one really knows the reason we perceive it that way.

  3. optical illusion -  light bends around the horizon of the earth becasue it is so big and there is an air atmosphere to diffuse the light as it travels past.

    The closer the moon is to the horizon, the biger it looks, and -

    if you can get to the middle of the pacific or the atlantic or indian oceans and see moonrise from the equator it looks freaking enormous!

    Whoever gave the thumbs down - I suggest you do some reading in the earth sciences section at the library - or look up some info on wikipedia - you're an idiot.
