  1. CL marriage is not recognized in Illinois.

  2. No, it's not going to be recognized by any state because Michigan doesn't have a common law marriage statute. You had to live in a state that did recognize it and use his surname exclusively with the intent of being husband and wife in order to have it recognized by other states. Since Michigan won't recognize it, no one else will, either. Even if you went on to live in Illinois (also not a state recognizing common law marriage), it isn't an option available to you.

  3. It sounds to me like you are going to need a stack of old pay stubs, driver's licenses, utility bills, school or health records - all kinds of proof that you used "Sally Jones" when you were living with John Jones, and now you want to change your name to "Sally Smith".  If you applied for a new SSN as "Jones", the SS Admin may send (or sell) you a copy of your application, which will help.

Take a thick book, because you will be waiting in line and at desks while they straighten this out. You will probably have to tell your story to three levels of clerks, who will all make you go through ALL of it before they decide to bump you up to their supervisor.

I'd suggest a collection of Dave Barry columns. They are short, easy to read amidst distractions, and will keep you smiling as you fight the officials.
