You do not get one from a hospital, you get them from the state or county, depending on your state. It takes 4 to 6 weeks.

I needed my birth certificate for a trip and I had lost mine.

What I did was I went to the town hall in the small town that I used to live in and they had it in the records, problem solved!!

Normally it is the county where you were born that you would get a birth certificate from. You should be able to look on their website and find out where to go. In most case you should be able to get it on the spot.
