  1. If you lost the original battery charger, you may be able to get an off brand charger that will charge the same as the original one for about half the price.

  2. It is a gamble.

You never know what is inside the generic charger. What voltage it supplies, what current, whether it has automatic charge control and shutoff or switch to trickle (in other words, is it a smart charger, and if yes, is it tuned for your particular battery type, or dull charger that just keeps on charging no mater what), or how it handles the heat and such....

Generic chargers are usually meant to be able to charge a wide range of batteries. Does it know what kind of battery you put into it? Will it handle 110V@60HZ equally well as European 220V@50HZ?

You can get lucky and get a good one, or get unlucky and get a bad one... And if you get a bad one, yes - it may reduce your battery life by overcharging,  or consistently undercharge it, so that you'll get fewer shots off a charge, or in worst and not very likely scenario fry it all together and/or cause a fire..

So you decide - do you want to save a few dollars and gamble, or you want to go for a genuine one and be sure? Your call.

    LEM.

  3. a charger will not make your battery die faster, but your battery will die faster if you charge it regularly.

Li-ion batteries has 300-500 charge times. the answer is obvious if you charge it over-frequently. You can buy another replacement battery for your camera,
