because I worked for a not for profit company,I AM NOT ENTITLED TO ANY UNEMPLOYMENT MONEY.I AM 2 PAYMENTS BEHIND ON MY CAR AND AM GOING TO LOOSE IT ANY MINUTE NOW.NO FAMILY HELP AT ALL.I AM A NORMAL PERSON WHO DOES NOT DRINK OR DO DRUGS.I HAVE ALWAYS WORKED AND HAVE BEEN LOOKING DESPERATELY FOR A JOB. I LEFT MY 3 YEAR PROFESSION WITH NOTICE AND ON GOOD TERMS TO TRY A WHOLE NEW PROFESSION. I ONLY WORKED THERE FOR 30 DAYS AND GOT FIRED. I WAS FIRED BECAUSE I SPOKE UP ABOUT THE BARBARIC WORKING CONDITIONS THERE. SURE IT WAS ALOT MORE MONEY,HOWEVER WE WERE FORCED TO WORK IN A MISERABLY HOT ROOM FOR 12 HOURS A DAY WITHOUT ANY A BREAK,ONLY TO USE THE RESTROOM QUICKLY. WE WERE NOT GRANTED ANY DAYS OFF AND WORKED 7 DAYS A WEEK. BECAUSE I SPOKE UP,THE NEXT DAY I WAS FIRED.I WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK TO MY OLD JOB,BUT MY POSITION WS FILLED.ALL I WAS TRYING TO DO WAS TO GET A BETTER PAYING JOB AND CLOSER TO HOME BUT IT ALL WENT TERRIBLY WRONG.NOW I AM LEFT IN PIECES AND AM ABOUT TO BECOME HOMLESS.I AM VERY DEPRESSED AND CAN HARDLY MUSTER UP THE STRENGTH TO GO ON.NOW WHAT IS A PERSON TO DO-ANY SUGGESTIONS/

  1. You should call FISH, the Social Services Department, the Salvation Army and any other agency formed to help people like yourself.  You are not alone.  Our country is filled with people in the same circumstance and it is a crying shame.  Also, try the churches. They receive tax money to help people in trouble.  Try to get someone to help you with a car payment because, without a car, it is difficult to find work.

I also advise seeing a lawyer.  You might be eligible for some compensation from the company that fired you for speaking up.  If you can get some verification from other employees about the lousy conditions, the long hours, and the reason for your being fired, it might help.

  2. Go and see a social worker or go to a church .Iam sure you will find some help and dont get disappointed God helps everyone. Have faith and brighter days will come.

  3. Maybe you really got fired for shouting.

So, you work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Get your butt back in the kitchen and make my dinner.  I don't put the roof over your head so that you can browse eBay.

  4. I agree with Andrew. File immediately! The benefits will be drawn from your employer before this last one (you didn't work long enough with the non-profit to get anything from them)

  5. Working for a non-profit doesn't have anything to do with eligibility for unemployment.  If you were an employee, then you should still be covered.  If you were being paid under the table, or as a contractor, then you wouldn't be eligible.

Talk to your former employer - even if your job was filled, they might have something else available, or know of someplace else that is hiring.

    Good luck.

  6. Check with your state about the non-profit unemployment issue.  I am not aware that employees of non-profits are exempt from unemployment benefits.  If you are a W-2 employee, then you should be eligible for unemployment benefits.  Ministers may not be eligible because they are considered "self-employed" even if they get W-2's.

I know that in some states non-profits can elect not to pay the unemployment tax - but then when the employee applies for unemployment benefits, the non-profit has to reimburse the state for the amounts they would have paid if they had payed unemployment taxes.

    from http://www.guidestar.org/DisplayArticle....

"In all states, 501(c)(3) organizations are required to pay for unemployment claims in one of two ways: through state unemployment insurance tax (SUI) or as a reimbursing employer paying the state only for claims paid out to former employees."

  7. Whether or not the company you worked for was for profit, or a non-profit company, you are still entitled to unemployment benefits.  File for unemployment immediately.
