I lost my job and have yet to find another one,am on apayment plan with the irs and only have a week to catch

up on past due payments.what can i do,will irs work with me?

  1. It depends on your situation - particularly your payment history.  It doesn't hurt to ask if they will work with you.  They may require some bank account statements.  They may look to see if you are spending your money on stuff instead of paying them.


  2. Call the phone number on your latest notice and explain your current situation. If you are unable to pay because your income has dropped, your account can be classified as currently not collectible.  It won't go away, but active collection efforts will stop.

  3. Contact IRS immediately at 1-800-829-7650 or 1-800-829-0922 to discuss your options.  IRS can put your account in "currently not Collectible" until you find a job, but interest and penalties continue to accrue.

    BUT you must Contact IRS immediately. IRS can also put a skip on this month payment if you haven't used your skip yet.
