I lost strength in my right arm after 2 months of volleyball from serving. What causes this?

Okay so basically I joined the volleyball team and my serves were pretty good at first. I know that most people say that practice makes serves better but thats not really the case for me. In fact, after about two months into volleyball i sort of lost strength in my serving arm. When I served, I felt no strength in my arm whatsoever so my ball didn't go over. Can anyone explain what's causing this?

  1. Overuse injuries

Overuse injuries occur when stress is placed on a joint or other tissue, often by "overdoing" an activity or repeating the same activity. Overuse injuries include:

Pain and swelling from tiny tears (microtears) in the connective tissue in or around the tendon (tendinosis). Other symptoms of this type of tendon injury include loss of strength or movement in the arm.

This could be what is happening to you. I am not in any way a doctor or medical specialist. If i were you, I'd have your doctor check it out. If I were you, I'd rather be out of volleyball for a few months to let it heal than out for good. Good luck!

  2. My advice is have it checked out before it gets worse.

  3. hi. i am also in volleyball and this happened to me too. the first answer explains how it happened but if you want to continualy play volleyball for a long time here are some steps you can do. first of all i'm asuming you are overhand serving.

    1. definitley rest your arm alot. Try to play a different position than server for a while, or if you are in city, ask your coach if you can trade with another player when it is your turn to serve.

    2. when serving, take a step forward with the opposite leg as you serve (right arm serving, step with left leg). It will feel a little odd but it will help tremendously with your power and what it is doing is generating power from the momentem of your step and the swing of your arm instead of your shoulder doing all the work itself.

    3. make sure you are hitting with the palm of your hand and that you keep your hand stiff with fingers together. this will help the ball to go farther and also reducing the amount of power you will have to put in to your serve thus taking even more stress off your shoulder.

    4. you said you felt no strength in your serving arm. it might have just been explained and helped by my reasons. but it might also be a lack of confidence, caused by just seeing your serves not go over so many times. to help your confidence, try serving up against a wall, and when you start to feel confident in your power again, put a piece of tape up on the wall about  a couple ft. above your head and aim for that. once you can feel power at that height, move the tape up and keep working at it until you reach the net height. then, its time to practice on a net. start about 4 steps forward from the serving line and try to get 3 in a row over. work your way back to the starting line. yes it will take some practice but it is very worth the while when you can smoke 'um over each time and ace it!

  4. well this happens to me all the time in the begging in volleyball; for me its because im usually just back from summer and i havnt used it and all i have to do is do push ups and keep serving, but in your case it could be your not used to that stress on your arm or its because you have already had an injury in your arm and your just irritating it by using it and if its that you should put some ice pack on the are or a warm cloth then slowly start to work it it out t should start  to get better but it will still be a little soar. hope everything goes well C:
