I love Malta. I've been there on holiday a few times. But I was just wondering, what do the Maltese people think of us English that come over?

And what about the Germans? I can't say I like Germans anyway.

  1. It is hard to answer your question of “what the Maltese people think”, because the “Maltese people” consist of a large group of individuals each having their own opinion. But if I were to draft two general rules of thumb, they would be:

    1. We like people who want to have a laugh.

    2. We dislike people who complain about everything, and want everything as precise as it is in their own country. The general reasoning is that if you want things to work as they do in e.g. England or Germany, then why the h**l did you come to Malta? You should have stayed there.

I don't think we have too many preconceptions of who we do or don't like, we will act on an individual basis. I, for example, would never state “I can't say I like Germans”. I’ve met as many nice Germans as I’ve met German idiots, and the same goes for the English, and also for my fellow Maltese themselves.

  2. Hi there :-)

I'm Maltese.See it's very difficult to say what the Maltese think about tourists.Practically we have a Maltese saying that says:'Kif tagħmel jgħamlulek' which sort of means the way you treat people you are going to be treated.

Many Maltese, including myself follow alot that saying.

The Maltese people are considered very friendly and warmhearted among themselves as well with the tourists. But if any tourists insults our country they won't get a nice response.I'm including myself in it.I get really mad and pissed when that ever happens.

So basically,my point is our thoughts are based on how tourists treats us.

Well speaking about my experiences with some English people they seemed to be very friendly.I love the English old people that come to Malta. They are so sweet and loves to interect with locals.

About the German students,I haven't personally met many. However the few I met were young and types of persons who seeks for fun so they fitted well here.Since we are a fun-loving nation :-)

  3. This Danish couple asked me almost the same question a couple of weeks ago whilst on holiday in Malta. I don't mind tourists in general from wherever they come from. Tourism is our main and sole industry in Malta and basically our bread and butter . We have been thought to welcome tourists and be nice and helpful to them. Tourism is now part of who we are and in fact we have the reputation of being very welcoming ( Obviously no one is perfect and we are only humans after all )

  4. Malta is on very good terms with england, and even now, two currencies later (lira and now euro) some people still call the currency pounds.

And as mentioned beofre, we like the accent.

As for Germans, well they treid to bomb us of the face of the planet, and so you can probably imagine what we feel towards them.

The new generations perhaps not as strongly, but we have been heavily influenced by our parents and gran parents.

    We hate the Germans.

  5. about the english tourists:  i really like hearing them talking in their accent, and just love looking at their facial expression as they speak trying to articulate their words...

another thing which fazes me about the british tourists (and most other tourists for that matter) is their obsession of taking photographs of our old buses...  are they really that interesting?!?

british tourists also have a knack of turning into red tomatoes after a day at the beach...  this is one of the things which helps me identify these persons as tourists :))))

british tourists are also the most generous when it comes to tips :)))  the older ones are just adorable... they are easy to please, say a lot of thankyou's and please and like to converse with the locals... and are really pleasant (compared to italian tourists especially) - this is coming from a person who worked in a hotel serving tourists, so i know what i am saying :)))

i think this comes from the fact that british tourists still view malta as a far british outpost, a place where they go for holidays... after all, malta was used as such by the british when it was still a colony more than 40 years ago.  also the fact that many maltese speak english may be a factor... but well, i am not one to talk, as i am not english!!!

now about the germans:  i have met much more german students than older ones, as many german students come to learn english in malta... these student-tourists are just like the other student-tourists:  they like to party a lot, shopping, and going to the beach...  not much time to visit historical places, and not much time either to talk with the locals, so there is not much i can say about them!!!

hope this helped... please take no offense with what i said... i just say things as they come.... and hope you'll keep coming to malta... you know we always welcome you with open arms :)
