  1. American football is played at a much higher skill level and the outcome is usually quite predictable. In the Canadian game each team has to have a certain number of Canadian born players on the roster while the balance is made up of players who don't make the cut in the NFL. While the Canadian game does not have the same skill level it is more entertaining and is more unpredictable.

In the CFL (Canadian Football League) you can get a single point when the defensive team does not return the ball out of the end zone on either a kickoff, a missed field goal or a punt.

It is very rare to see them punt the ball on second down, however there are instances where they may punt the ball just before a quarter ends to take any advantage of a strong wind. The other time it may happen is if they try to do a "Quick Kick". The other team may not expect them to punt on second down and so there is not punt returner on the field.

And as already stated there are only three downs instead of four.

  2. In Canadian football you only have 3 downs to get a first down, unlike American where you have 4.

The Canadian field of play is 110 yards

The end zones in Canadian football are anywhere between ten to fifteen yards deeper, although the Canadian Football League uses 20 yard (18 m) end zones.

Canadian teams have twelve players per side, while American teams use eleven players. Both games have the same number of players required at the line of scrimmage, hence the twelfth player in the Canadian game plays a backfield position

    single

A one-point score. The kicking team scores a single when the ball is punted, drop kicked, or place kicked into the receiving team's goal area (without scoring a field goal) and the receiving team fails to run or kick the ball back into the field of play.

Singles do not exist in American football.

  3. American Football you can get one point after you score a touchdown, CFL has 3 downs instead of 4

  4. It's called the "single point" (or technically, the rouge). On a punt or missed field goal that goes into the end zone and is not returned out of the end zone, the team that kicked the ball gets a point.

The whole punting on third down has been explained by others. If there was a punt on second down that'd have to be a quick kick and that's extremely unusual (like once every five years you might see that).

  5. Wow, I didn't even know that the CFL had different rules.  That's lame.

  6. Canadian football is a sport in which two teams of twelve players each compete for territorial control of a field of play 110 yards (100.6 m) long and 65 yards (59.4 m) wide, with end zones 20 yards (18.3 m) deep. At each goal line is a set of forty-foot (12.2 m) high goalposts two uprights joined by a crossbar 18.5 feet (5.6 m) long which is ten feet (3.1 m) above the goal line. The goalposts may be H-shaped (both posts fixed in the ground) although in the higher-caliber competitions the tuning-fork design (supported by a single curved post behind the goal line, so that each post starts ten feet (3.1 m) above the ground) is preferred. The sides of the field are marked by white sidelines, the goal line is marked in white, and white lines are drawn laterally across the field every 5 yards (4.6 m) from the goal line.

It shares origins with, and is similar to (though distinct from) American football. For a discussion of differences between Canadian and American football see: Comparison of Canadian and American football

  7. The 1 point thing was from a Safety, which is when the defensive team recovers the ball in the offensive team's own endzone. They were punting on the 3 down because in the CFL there is only 3 downs.

  8. Safety...when the team can't get the ball out of their end zone.

  9. We have less downs than in American football and our field is ten yards shorter. Briefly we have more skills involved and better athletes.

  10. Their is 3 downs in the CFL

  11. the 1 point is called a ruge..the special teams kick goes out of or does not leave the end zone..the kicking team gains 1 point..punt field goal..quick kick or dropkick..

  12. A) Three downs not four in Canadian football

    B) One point (for the kicking team) for a missed field goal that is not returned out of the endzone
