  1. I think that the best way is to make sure when you go out to eat it's at a bit more of an upscale restaurant where they will be knowledgeable about food allergies.  If you find one or two local spots that work for you, you can get to know the wait staff (and perhaps the chefs!) and once you are a regular who tips well, I'd be they'd be more than willing to accomodate you.

  2. Being a chef, I would say to stay at home.  First of all because even if you order your pizza w/o mushrooms, other ingredients might have been in contact with the mushers, making you have a reaction and you sue us and we did everything in our power to make sure your zza had no mushers.  Or you order the caesar salad and you have a reaction because anchovie is a very common ingredient in the dressing and you sue us and you should've done your homework and asked us if we have anchovie in the dressing.

  3. look at what is listed on the menu, if whats on the food isnt on the menu, order it if you think it looks good, and if you find something your alrgic to, take it off, you can also ask the waiter/waitress to see if something you cant eat is baked into it.

  4. I have a lot of allergies too, and a very sensitive stomach. For example, mushrooms. When I order a pasta dish I always ask if I can get it without mushrooms. If not, I'll ask what other options they have without mushrooms.

You can pretty much do this with any food.

Make sure to ask, and if you really need to know something, maybe ask the waitress to ask somebody else what the exact ingredients are.  I know firsthand how terrible it can be when you go out to eat and you get sick because of an allergy.

    Hope this helps !

  5. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE call ahead to see if a restaurant can accomodate you. Any and every restaurant you go to.

I have seen chefs gets soooo upset because people want to alter their recipes. If they aren't willing to bend to accomodate you over the phone, then you won't waste anyone's time at the restaurant, had you not called beforehand.

Preview a menu online and see if there is something on it you like. Call ahead and see if it can be altered to suit you and to make sure it's still available. (My restaurant still hasn't updated their online dessert menu after 2 weeks.)
