  1. Don't listen to 5starprospect1, he has obviously never played hockey.  I have played since I was 4 years old and I will play for the rest of my life until my body says "no more."  If you know how to ice skate, picking up a hockey stick is the next step you need to take.  But learn how to skate first if you don't know how.

  2. If you are good at floor hockey that means you are good at the game of hockey.  However, to be good at ICE hockey or INLINE hockey, skating is the most important thing.

I'm am a great hockey player, but I didn't learn to skate until I was 19 years old.  I am now just about 30 and I've been playing inline hockey the last 9 years.  The only thing limiting me from being really really great is my skating.  I've never had skating lessons or practices.  I just learned by playing in rec leagues.  I WISH I learned how to skate at an early age.  It's amazing watching some of the guys where I play...  A lot of the players who play in the higher levels are only there because they are great skaters.  Meanwhile I'm stuck in the lower tiers because I know I can't skate with the higher level players.  I still usually lead my teams in goals and points, but only dream of being a fluid skater.

So in conclusion, if you want to be good at playing hockey on skates... you need to be a great skater first.  The hockey sense usually comes naturally.  I got my hockey sense from watching hundreds of NHL games, and even playing hockey video games.

  3. You're much better off learning to skate and playing in-line or ice hockey depending on what's available to you as well as your budget. Floor hockey is a nice introduction to the game but it's really not the same. As a die-hard ice and roller hockey player, it's as if you were playing whiffleball in the sand as opposed to baseball at your favourite ballpark in the bigs. And yeah, don't worry about 5star. His knowlege of hockey is about as good as Bettman's.

  4. Yeah, Habs Fan is right in that if your ultimate goal is to be good at ice hockey then most if not all of your effort should be put toward that end.

However, I understand how other things can influence whether you play street or ice hockey.

When I was a teen - during the 70's - the only ice that I could play on was my neighbors pond (more like a puddle) and we were lucky to have it for more than 3 or 4 days. That's if it ever got that cold during the winter around Philly.

There were local ice rinks but I couldn't afford them or the required equipment until I was able to work. But, by then, my interest in playing was beginning to subside and I was moving all over the country more concerned about other things.

So, play what you can as much as you can. In time you'll be able to pursue which version you want to become good at. I can honestly say that the street version is a great way to learn most of the basics, but there is nothing like being on the ice.

  5. Play spring ice hockey league.  Go to your local ice rink and ask about stick and puck times, which is a chance to get out there and just kinda shoot around.  Bottom line no one can so play as much as is possible.

  6. definitely a start...my performance in floor hockey in PE (10 minute games, 16 games, 14 goals and 14 assists) has inspired me to play for my high school in senior year (its basically an intramural sport b/c we aren't school sponsored but its a start)

get a stick and practice shooting though.  lately i haven't done much, i need to tape up my stick's blade, but i go old school and shoot on my trash can (its not metal though lol)

get to the rink as much as possible, ignore basketball fans like 5star, and practice.

  7. I feel ya dewman.  If only we hadn't moved from connecticut to north carolina when I was little...

  8. I don't even think there was one game on ESPN this year?
