  1. Little ones have problems with change and with strangers.  You are a stranger.  Crying tells you they are stressed in most cases.

I would give them a stuff animal to hug and cry with, saying "wow the teddy bear sure misses his mommy."   Then I would say can I hug the teddy bear to, have a big smile on my face, and say "Wow that made me feel better.  Maybe I can find something else to make me smile."

Kids will test limits so have basic rule.  No hitting or you sit in the chair for 1-3 minutes (depending on age).   No throwing or the chair.  The naughty chair.   Ignore what you can like crying after the first acknowlegement that the child is upset.   Otherwise, you are supporting/feeding a negative behavior.

Have the kids color a picture for when mommy/daddy comes to get them.   Put that picture on a board by the door so they can run and give mommy the hug and get the picture.   Many kids are afraid their parent will never come back, especially if there is a recent divorce or separation of the parents.

Give lots of attention to those kids who are not crying, by saying, "Wow Henry you really are having fun stacking those blocks." to show the crying child they get attention for positive behaviors.

Also ask the parent for a new child to have them bring a couple of special items, like their favorite toy or blanket.   Security is a positive thing for a child.

Patience is hard but you have no choice.  And remember the age of the child and how often that child has been away from the parents, i.e., baby sitter, will make a difference.

  2. as a pre school leader myself i know how hard it is to stop the new children to stop crying but some of the methods i have learnt it to get the child a key worker (a staff member who they relate to and trust ) to get them to calm down, also distracting them is essential and keeping them interested in a certain activity. if all else fails and  you have tried more things out then speak to the parents and try and find out why the child may be crying the most probably answer is to explain to the parents that the child is not yet really to come to school quite yet, and suggest taking there child to similar environment with other children around them for them to get used to it.

  3. i'm glad my kid isn't in YOUR daycare.

isn't this something you should be knowledgable in before you open a day care?

  4. It usually takes about 2 weeks for young children to get used to new situations, especially if its when mom and dad are leaving them with someone they don't know!  You need to try to get someone to help you so that they can focus on the other kids and you can give the new one some one on one time...hold them, hug them, play with them, then introduce one of the sweetest and nicest other children to the new one, bringing her into the group.  Once the child associates you with safety and fun and love, they won't mind that mom and dad leave so much.

  5. Usually, kids are not crying if they are kept busy. Keep them busy with activities or have them play outside on the playground.

They also need to feel comfortable and safe. Atmosphere is everything: calm people, calm environment, organization, music, interaction with each other and with their teachers, etc..

You and your staff don't seem to be good with kids. I mean for 15 days you can't get the kids to stop crying? They're crying because they don't want to be there.

Suggestions: show some energy, show them you care, show creativity, talk with their parents, interact with the kids, or if you have to.... hire new and experienced staff that are great with kids. You may have to redo your entire room so that it is child friendly and appealing.

I tell you. I'm surprised that you still have any clients. Do something about your problem before you do lose all your clients.

  6. What kind of things do they do for playtime. Do you read them age appropriate stories. There are lots of children's songs that involve physical activity. Good luck!
