  1. When you have 55 students, my experience of teaching for 23 years tells me that I pretty well have to settle on one method: lecturing.  It's nearly impossible to have a group discussion with that many; however, here's a trick if you're determined to do it.  Split the class into 11 groups of 5.  Give each group a topic to discuss with questions to answer.  This should take maybe 20 minutes.  Their goal is to present a concise 5 minute presentation of what they discussed and the answers to the questions with their rationale.  Of course, this entire process can't happen in just one period... unless your period is a couple hours long.

  2. Well, the fact you referred to the kids as "not very bright" says alot about you. They may be unmotivated, but if you assume they are not very bright, you will treat them as such. Alot of what you can do depends on the age of the students. I assume they are college kids. You need to provide them fast paced instruction that begins at their level and connects it to the expected level. Then rapidly move them to performing tasks at the expected level. The first step is to raise your expectations. Based on what, and how, you wrote, I hope my kids never are instructed by you until your attitude, expectations, and grammar improve.

  3. I would suggest getting creative, use lots of visuals, and make the class fun!  Find out what motivates the students, then run with it!  The best teachers are the ones that think outside the box!
