  1. If it is difficult for you here, why do you stay?

  2. Some of the answers being given here are just not factual. They are either pure guesswork, or people are deliberately putting incorrect information because they are anti-immigration.

If you have nothing useful to add, please don't bother writing here.

Now I will write something about this case which will not be a complete answer, but at least it will be true.

First, it is just not true the a person who marries after he/she receives their green card will have to wait for 5 years for their spouse to join them. It is also not true that no preference is given to a spouse in such circumstances.

The link 1.below will take you to the official Immigration service that will give most of the answers you need, explain the choices an outline of the procedures, and links to the application forms. You need to read all that is there.

It is true that on application, the spouse, unmarried children and parents of a US citizen don't have to wait for a an immigrant visa number to become available once the visa application has been approved by USCIS, and that the spouse and children of a Legal Permanent Resident ( LPR) do, but in fact they DO receive a preference, and it is quite a high one.

In fact the highest, or 1st  preference is given to the unmarried adult sons and daughters of US citizens, and the next highest, or 2nd preference given to the spouses of an LPRs,their  unmarried children, AND their unmarried adult sons and daughters.

Of course the number of immigrants in any month or year is limited, The details are to big to write about here, but below at 2) I have given a link to the official monthly visa statement for July 2008, posted by the US Department of State, which will  give you a good idea how this works. You can also find a link to past bulletins, and at the beginning of each month can check the new ones.

Now a word about Canadian Immigration.

It does NOT take 4 years at all. In fact it can be extremely quick, even weeks, and the Canadian government is at present taking action to speed up the procedure.

d on where you come from.

The  Canadian immigration scheme is based around a list of  jobs for which Canada wishes to attract skilled workers, and another list of highly skilled and professional workers that Canada needs. It involves a points system. Prospective immigrants are eligible for award of points for various things. Education and training, age, language fluency in English, French or both, are some of them.

If you have a spouse or partner, they may be able to get a few extra points to help. In fact, after having a look at the scheme and how the points are awarded, a couple should see which of them could get the most, and then that one should be the applicant, and the other one can be the contributor of a few more points.

Below at 3. is a link to the official Canadian Government immigration page, and many others. Somewhere there is a link where you can find out online how many points you could get,and whether it is enough. It is not necessary to have a job offer if you qualify. They will let you in as long as you have a bit of money to last while you look around. Of course, if you are already in the USA as a LPR, you may be able to get a job offer in advance. That is also a plus.

The highest skilled list of jobs does require good qualifications and experience. Good degrees and /or professional qhalifications. The lower skilled jobs required less. Don't be disheartened. Canada wants immigrants.

Hope this is of some use to you.

  3. If you are a legal permanent resident, then you can petition for your wife to join you.  As a LPR, you cannot get her any priority, so it will take at least 5 years before she can join you.

You can also wait until you get citizenship, then apply for a spousal visa.  It will take about 2 years after you get citizenship.  Mind you, not living together does make it more difficult to prove a valid marriage and get the visa approved.

You neglect to mention your citizenship and that of your wife.  If you are both from the same country, you can always return home so you can be together.  It certainly is faster than shopping around for another country and starting immigration processes from scratch.  Canadian immigration is quite strict, and they are backlogged about 4 years, if you are accepted.

  4. Call the bar association for the state you are in and get a good immigration lawyer. Things always go much faster with a lawyer.

  5. get citizenship then petition for your wife. and you might want to brush up on your english just a'bit. :)
