I made a dvd from my mini-dv camcorder to my dvd- recoder?

how come i cant import that dvd to my mac though i movie 8?

now i have a good raw DVD,

i want to edit it in imovie .

my new mac book with i movie 8 does not see the dvd?

and my camcorder does not see my brand new mac book.

do i need to get a avi converter and contect it through that hardware?

need to get my dvd into imovie8 ?

please help

  1. You may not have finalised the DVD in your recorder.  But why not capture your MiniDV footage directly on the Mac?  Going via your DVD recorder is just degrading the video quality and taking more time and effort.


  2. Iridflare is correct - just get a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable and connect the camcorder's DV port directly to your Mac's firewire 400 port and import to iMovie08. Unless you have a new Mac Air which does not have a firewire port - All of the other Macs do have them and have for many years. Firewire cables are generally less than US$10.

    If, for whatever reason, this is not possible, you can rip the DVD using HandBrake http://handbrake.fr/ then drag the file (mp4 is probably easiest) in to the iMovie clips pane or the timeline. Using this two step methiod will result in reduced video quality as DVD video is compressed quite a lot - much better that you go directly from uncompressed DV straight in from the tape.

    Also, since you just got your MacBook and are a "legal" user of iMovie08, for more editing flexibility, consider downloading and installing iMovie HD 06:
