I plan to use a wireless router if and when we do order the high speed internet through AT&T.... should I get the router before I order the internet (if I do) or take the one AT&T offers which is gateway? how much electricity does a router use to run all day? and what brand would you suggest me get for cheap? (not cheap-cheap but hopefully less than $50 if possible...)

if we do get the internest it will either be the basic or Express if you need that info...

  1. Personally I would buy the router off of newegg.com its alot better for things because it has customer reviews and youre buying from a company not some guy sitting in his boxers on a bean bag eatting cheetohs.... neways if its high speed internet its gonna be cable internet right? Do they offer a wifi router? you might want to ask that. But i suggest buying one online and setting up your own settings. Make sure you have the right standard. B,G, or N.... another thing you want to take into consideration is that if your using the wifi and you have High speed internet. Youre not gonna get the top speed. Your internet is going to be as fast as that router can broadcast wireless. In which case would be 54Mbs connection for G standard. Its alot more for N standard but i dont know if your reciever is N standard. Itll be faster if you cable in.

  2. Your basic wireless router, be it D-Link, Linksys or Belkin, runs about $60. All of them get the job done. You will see messages saying this brand or that brand is no good, but the fact is they all work when properly configured. If you don't read the manual and follow the instructions, it's not surprising it does not work well.

Make sure that AT&T is offering a modem/router when making your decision. Most the time AT&T supplies just a modem.

The router, no matter who supplies it, uses next to no power, far less than a light bulb. You'll never see it on your bill
