I moved out of state, well actually I'll be in the new state, Maryland in a few days. I left it up to my fiancee' to check out the new apartment, BIG MISTAKE! The place has water-bugs, spiders and crickets, how? I don't know. I have three children and one of them has autism. I don't need her finding any of these bugs and I also have a three month old, I don't need any of these bugs crawling on her. Can anyone give any pointers on how to combat these creatures? Also there were little bugs crawling around in the ceiling light cover. The dishwasher is an older model and the kids room in my opinion is rather small. We signed the lease before seeing the apartment so I know I'm locked in the lease contract for a year. I feel like crying at this point because I did not know we were going to be taken advantage of this way. I feel horrible for potentially subjecting my children to basically outdoor living. Can anyone tell me anything besides a "that's what you get for going in blindly committing to a residence you didn't see" because I feel like c**p! Besides the bug situation they told me the place was renovated but there are small cracks in a couple of the closets and the bathtub paint is chipped. Please someone, help me out here. Also I have a sliding door that leads to the 'backyard' and I feel the corners of the sliding door needs sealing.

  1. How long ago did you sign the lease? All states have some form of a right to rescind law. That means there is, by law, a certain number of days after you sign, that you can back out. Call your state's Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs.

  2. Read your lease and study the responsibilities of the landlord. Take video of the bugs and other problems with the apartment. Make your requests for extermination of the bugs and repairs in writing. If the landlord fails to rectify problems, then he would be the one violating the lease and give you an opportunity to break it.

  3. Make two copies of a list of things that need to be done. You and your landlord sign them and date them. Take pics and video. Make sure you have a copy of your lease. The landlord should have given you a landlord/tenants rights handbook. If not ask for one it is the law. It should tell you in there what do in this kind of situation.

  4. Welcom to Maryland!!! No! I am not laughing! this is serious!!! How do you know the place is crawling with bugs if you haven't moved in yet? Your finance has moved in already?  If so, what he should NOW! Is to call the management people of the residence, and DEMAND the place to be fumicated! ASAP! Why on earth would anyone rented a place without looking at it is beyond me! But, anyway! tell the guy to do as I say, if the management takes action right away, that's good! BUT if they don't -and refuse to make the necessary repairs and debugging, tell you guy to take as many pictures as he can of the bugs crawling aroun, the condition of the premises, and move out!!! Sure, they are going to try and make you pay for the rest of the lease, but if they take you to court, show the Judge the pictures, and that these people refused to fumigate the place!!! I don't think they can do much if your finance has only lived there for a month or two. What gets me is, what was he thinking about when he first moved in, and saw the condition of the place!!! By the way! it's NOT up to YOU to pay for the fumigation! Like I said, Welcome to bug infested Maryland!!!!
