Question:

I mistook a lid on the wine for a cork!?

I just opened a bottle of wine. However,I thought it had a cork as there was a cover so put the corkscrew in. I soon realised that there was a lid instead and I had put a hole in it.

It's just a really cheap metal lid with plastic on the inside. Do you think my wine is still safe to drink? I know when cork goes into wine you should chuck it. I know this is stupid but I'm never going to meet you!

  1. It's fine, just keep an eye out for bits of the lid. If you're worried about bits seive it first. The only reason you throw wine with bits of cork is because the cork has degraded therefore the wine has been aired and likely to gone off.

  2. The wine will be fine. It is very unlikely that the screwtop will have fragmented. As others have said, if you're worried use a fine sieve to filter out any deposits.

To clarify about pieces of cork in wine - if pieces of cork end up in your wine from opening the bottle then just fish them out with your finger, or use a sieve. If the wine smells and tastes OK then don't waste it by chucking it out. A wine is 'corked' if it is oxidised (smells and tastes sour), not just by having pieces of cork in it.

    Emjoy your bottle.

  3. Pretty much everyone has done this before (well I have anyway). Just drink it, it'll be fine.

  4. join the club  strain it if worried - if you don't drink it all

    cover tightly with cling film

    no worries

  5. you'll be fine, this made me smile though, nice to know there are other donuts besides me in this world...peace

  6. Lol i have done this before (after a few drinks) unscrewinga s***w top bottle with a corkscrew! It's fine to drink - i can't see why not.

  7. Glad to see I'm not the only one that has done this.....  The wine I opened was fine and I closed the lid fragments back down to close it and it was still good a week later in the frig.....

It should have stated that it had a s***w lid and not a cork....

  8. Should be fine, but you'll have to drink it all. Have fun.

  9. If you want to make sure the pieces don't come out in you glass pour it through a seive to "catch" the pieces of the lid.

hope this helps.              good luck and enjoy.

  10. I have done this on more than one occasion - can't wait for a drink to even check if it's a cork or not! It will not affect the taste at all. Enjoy.

  11. Yes, no problem just drink the lot, enjoy!

  12. Seriously - if the stuff has a lid rather than a cork, the quality won't suffer whatever you do to the bottle :-)
