I just moved back In Indy to be closer to family but I am having trouble finding a job. I have a business degree and JD Law degree. I have experience as a Legal Consultant and managed MGM Grand in Las Vegas but I can't seem to get even a second looking here in the midwest. What should I do? Find a recruiter or headhunter? How? I am just at a loss right now.

  1. I know it doesn't sound too exciting but the Marion County Prosecutor's office is hiring I believe. I guess it would be a start.

  2. I would suggest a headhunter.  Maybe advertise yourself on craigslist too.  Of course, there's nothing like just showing up in person with a resume.

This is weird, because I'm considering moving back to Indy to be closer to my family too.  Hope it works out for you.

  3. Try the law firm Hall, Render, et al.... they are deep in healthcare and consulting.  Even if something from that firm doesn't work out - you can ask about others and start networking - they are connected!

  4. Have you tried careerbuilder.com?  Or attended any networking events.  I've heard (from the email I'll include)only 20% of jobs are posted publicly the rest are attained simply by knowing someone.  Networking is a great way to meet people and land the job of your dreams!  I also joined www.linkedin.com another networking site.  You can search for former co-workers and bosses and that maybe aren't at the same company that you met them at and then can introduce you to some people or refer you for a position within the company they work for now....

    Hope this helps!

    Good luck to you!

Copy from and email I received :Only 20% of jobs are publicly advertised. The other 80% are filled by networking.

  5. I would go to every law firm that you feel is worthwhile and throw them a resume.  You may not make the money you want right off the bat, but I know there are openings.  There are good state jobs too and I know for a fact they have awesome insurance.  This will give you time to find the job you want.  There's a new casino in Shelbyville which is about 45-55 minutes from downtown.

  6. We moved from Indy to Memphis when Kemper Insurance was sold and they closed my husband's office, which he was managing at the time. He now works as a risk manager at a large gambling corporate office.

As a former claims adjuster and paralegal, I would suggest you apply to a firm that handles insurance defense work. Or, start your own firm, and charge insurers a flat fee to take a case. That way, if you handle a case through trial and do a good job, you will get more work. Working for a bigger firm may give you the experience you need to go out on your own. It is steady work (I am not sure if Indiana passed tort reform laws or not), but, either way, there are always greedy attorneys, plenty of claimants that want representation, and plenty of investigative work. Good luck. :)
