  1. All great suggestions from the other answers. Also, try your local elementary schools. They'll be familiar with your need for community service hours AND they always need something done. If the schools are close enough, go there yourself instead of calling. Being able to put a face to the request will increase your chances.

    Good luck!

  2. im in 8th grade middle school to and i take avid and its the same thing your taking. we half to do 10 hours of community service and what i did was i picked up alot of garbage and i helped out at librarys and i helped out at school offices........thats all i did and in a really short period i got all of my hours done...hope i helped:)

  3. How about your animal shelter? I bet they need help.

Is there a National Wildlife Refuge near you? They need volunteers and it's a great choice if you like being outside.

Many churches need volunteers, for everything from babysitting to cooking and serving at church suppers.

Does your school have a sports booster club? They sometimes need help raising money for sports equipment and expenses.

Arts councils, Boy and Girl Scouts, big brother/big sister programs......

  4. I agree with the other poster -- one week to do 10 hours of community service is going to be VERY difficult, if not impossible.

When you write organizations, don't write IN ALL CAPS and don't sound desperate -- those are both big turn offs for organizations that involve volunteers.

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org), Change.org (http://www.change.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. There's also this government sponsored site (http://volunteer.gov/gov/) which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).

  5. Ten hours of volunteer work in a week? Good luck!  ;o)

Finding volunteer work when you're 13 can be difficult - a lot of places have an age 16 limit. Try a hospital where they allow candy stripers, or an animal shelter.

Another idea would be to ask your parents or their friends if they would be able to take a volunteer where they work. Or, try to do it all over the weekend on some sort of community park clean-up (depending on the weather where you live) or something like that.

  6. I can't imagine that an animal shelter would turn you down. Or youmight try a nursing home--perhaps you could just do some light housekeeping or play cards with the residents. Absolutely check with your church--my daughters used to work in the daycare during services.

(Just a helpful hint for the future--like homework, this shouldn't be put off until the last minute.)
