  1. Most dairy cattle are a breed known as "Holsteins". They are the famaliar white cows with black markings. I estimate the cow is about 5 feet at the sholder and weighs between 1500 and 2000 pounds. The Holstein has two short horns, but sometimes these are removed. This is known as "polling". Holstein bulls are amoungst the largest of cattle, up to 6 feet at the sholder and 2500 or more pounds. Holsteins are bred for milk production. One cow can give up to 25 gallons of milk a day. This is an estimate based on the fact the udder is 200 pounds and milk weighs about 8 pounds a gallon. Normally cows can live over 20 years, but Holsteins have a working life of only 4 years. This is because the enormous weight of the cow's udders eventually destroys the animal's ankles. No longer able to stand, the cattle are recycled into beef. Most lean ground beef comes from Holsteins.

  2. An average dairy cow produces about 16,000 pounds of milk in a 300 day lactation. Some can produce more but it's quite a stress on the animal. Our farm "milks" about 100 cows twice a day. An average Holstein weighs between 1000 to 1600 pounds and I should know I've been stepped on by quite a few.  And yes cows do kick, HARD.

By the way, are you looking for a job?

  3. A lot of good stuff on dairy cows, probably more than you wanted.
