If you are flexible on your departure time and date, try http://www.Priceline.com as you can name your price.  Most of the time, your best bet will be to go to the airline website directly, as they are now as competitive as the resale websites.  Both united http://www.united.com/ and American http://www.aa.com/index_us.jhtml fly to El Salvador for cheap.

Try to fly out on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for the cheapest fares.

As for the car, many of the local car agencies also have international locations.  Try Hertz, Avis, Alamo, and budget.

You could also try to hire a small bus/van driver for the week.  They run about $100 - $150 per day.

Try going to Taca's website, www.taca.com.  This is El Salvador's, and other Central American countries, main airline.  I've found better deals on this website than on travelocity or cheaptickets.  Good luck.
