Pick out his favorite character/theme. Then plan activities that correspond! Like if it's spider man, you can have the decorations all spider man, and the activities could be making spider man masks, or spider man poses for pictures.  If he likes a specific sport, like baseball, you can again get corresponding decorations, and one of the activities can be a version of pin the tail on the donkey but instead it's put the baseball in the mitt!

Fishing theme:

Blue Jello in clear plastic cups, goldfish crackers on top and a wooden skewer stuck in with a gummy worm dangling from it for a party snack

Fishing game for prizes

Have kids toss a ping pong ball into a quart jar of colored water and win the gold fish swimming in the jar. Have the jars on a table like a carnival game

Frost cake to look like an aquarium then decorate with plastic aquarium plants, castles, other aquarium decorations. They have them at the dollar store.

Send a goldfish home with each kid instead of a candy bag. They run about 10/$1 at Wal*Mart.

Hang green paper streamers  for "sea weed" and paper fish made out of poster board from the ceiling and cover windows with blue tissue paper so the room looks blue like an ocean. These are also available at the dollar store.

I threw this party for MY 6 yr old son a few years ago, and including invitations (we made them with scrap booking paper that looked like water and ocean fish stickers), spent $30 for a party with 8 friends.

I thought about it later, and at the time of our party the dollar store had snorkels as well, and that would have been cute too, for all the boys to be wearing cheap plastic snorkels for the party.

They all loved it the way it was, though.

Our local fire dept. allows parties there for free.  Kids get to have cake there (parents bring), veiw the staition and trucks, get to ahng out with the fireman, pictures infront of the truck.  If your son like fire trucks that might work for ya.  Call the local fire dept. to see!
