this is a project for school.....we are researching allternitve fuel sources.....can you tell me....

1) how expensive it would be to repair a hydrogen fuel cell car

2) how efficient is a hydrogen fue cell cars engine?

3) what kind of options can you get with a mercedes and a mercedes with the hydrogen

4) would it be a manual transmission or otherwise?

5)how long will that battery last in a hydrogen car?

k, thats it PLEASE HELP with as much info as you can

AND DONT ANWSER IF YOU'RE NOT SERIOUS

THANKS SOOOO MUCH!!!!

  1. Should Have Done Your HW Last Night!

  2. 1)  It depends on how many there are.  If everyone has a hydrogen car, repairs would cost as much as repairs to a gas car.  If there are only a couple on the road, you better have a fat wallet or a good warranty.

    2)  Once again, it depends.  However, energy wise a hydrogen car would not be very efficient at all.  Hydrogen takes alot of energy to make because it doesn't occur as a stand-alone molecule on Earth.  You either have to separate it from hydrocarbons (fossil fuel) or separate it from H2O (water).  Right now almost all of our hydrogen comes from fossil fuels.  If you get it from water, you pay a huge energy penalty: about 50% of the energy you put into the water is used up in the separation process.  The bottom line is that efficiency is NOT an advantage of hydrogen.  The real advantage is in it's abundancy and it's potential as a clean source of energy.  Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the known universe, so we would (probably) never run out of it.  Potentially, we could set up plants where wind or solar plants use the electricity they generate to electrolyze water, which would make hydrogen almost 100% emmission free.

The problem then becomes availability of clean fresh water, which is rapidly becoming as serious an environmental issue as Global Warming.

    3)  I would check BMW's website.  I believe their hydrogen car is just like their other cars, but with a hydrogen tank and a gasoline tank so you can choose what to use at the pump.  You pay more and the car is heavier.  I don't think Mercedes offers a hydrogen car.  Also take a look at Honda's FCX, which they say they will offer soon.  The difference between those cars is in their engines.  The BMW actually burns the hydrogen, whereas the Honda uses it to power a chemical reaction inside a fuel cell, which generates electricity to run the vehicle.  Essentially, it's an electric car that uses a fuel cell instead of a battery.  Google "BMW Hydrogen Car" and "Honda FCX"

    4) The Bimmer I think uses either manual or automatic.  The Honda uses something called a CVT, or Continuous Variable Transmission.  There would be only 3 "gears", forward, reverse and park.  Since most people only use Drive, Reverse and Park in an automatic, the only difference you would notice when driving the FCX is that there would never be any gear shifting from the transmission.

    5) As long as you keep putting hydrogen or water into it

    Good luck!

  3. Check out green.yahoo.com

There is a lot of information there on green cars and green living.

  4. Hydrogen is not a viable solution. There is no infrastructure and we are at least 20 years behind in research... Solar is the only viable alternative, renewable, clean energy source. As of yet, hydrogen is completely impractical.

  5. 1) no one knows because there are no hydrogen fuel cell cars.   However, it will probably be on the order of an electric car (wihout the battery maintenance which is the most expensive part of maintaining an electric car)

    2)  fuel cells produce ELECTRICITY directly therefore you are comparing apples to oranges .. but fuel cells are very efficient in transforming hydrogen to electricity..  when you compaire with the efficiency of batteries..

    3) does Mercedes have a fuel cell powered car?? I doubt if it is commercially available.

    4) as I said it is probably an electric car..with electric motors which may or may not need a transmission debending upon the motors.

    5) battery??
