I am new to town and I have a 4 month old and a 5 year old. I need a great daycare. No in home. Also, what are your thoughts on a 4 month old in daycare? Too soon? Experience? Please help. Also , I have looked into a few. Do you know of Magnolia Daycare and Preschool? Its on McKinnley!

  1. Did you try calling your local elementary school?  They may have recommendations.  Some even have preschools affiliated with the school.  Also try local social service agencies.  I'm not sure what they would be called in your area but I think if you look in the phone book for welfare agencies they could direct you to a child care information service.  When you check out preschool and day care programs, visit the facility when children are present.  Look for cleanliness, staff/child ratio, and program routine.  Ask what the curriculum is and what kind of daily schedule the children follow.  Personally, I wouldn't put a 4 month-old in daycare unless absolutely necessary.  For a child that young, the ratio of adults to children should be very low to ensure that the children get a lot of individual attention.  Once your children are enrolled, try to pop in unexpectedly sometimes to visit and observe.  Have lunch with your child.  Volunteer, even if it's only for an hour, to read to the kids or play a game or make play dough.  You and your child will love it, and it will give you a chance to see what goes on.

  2. I've heard some good things about these day care centers.  However, the best thing for you to do is to actually experience hands-on what the day care is all about.  Call the day care and make an appointment to visit.  Stay as long as you like.   Ask to see the newborn and the 5 year old rooms.  Be in the room and experience the interaction between the teachers and the children.  Good luck!
