  1. The Quinceañeras is a comming to age tradition in LatinAmerica, including PR.  Is somehow similar to the sweet sixtenn celebration in other cultures, but celebrated at the 15th birthday.  After this celebration the girl is considered a young woman that is formally presented to society.

You do not have to be a catholic or christian, but if you do a special service or ceremony is held at a church prior to a reception celebration.  Ussually 15 girls friends of the Quinceañera wear fashion dresses of the same colors / style and march each with a guy in tuxedo,  while someone reads a composition on the life of the quinceañera.  Each couple symbolize one year in the life of the girl.

A ceremony that is included during the reception have the father of the girl changing the shoes, ussually low heel sandals, the girl was wearing for high heels more appropriate for a young woman.  Both set of shoes are of same color.

Some families spend in a Quinceañera celebration just a little less than in a wedding reception.

  3. The Quinceañera or Quince Años (sometimes represented XV Años, meaning "fifteen years") is, in some Spanish-speaking regions of the Americas, a young woman's celebration of her fifteenth birthday, which is celebrated in a unique and different way from her other birthdays. In some countries, such as Puerto Rico or Peru, the word Quinceañero is used instead of Quinceañera when referring to the celebration.

The word is also used to refer to the young woman whose 15th birthday is being celebrated (analogous to the word cumpleañera for "birthday girl"). The closest equivalents to the Quinceañera in the English-speaking world are the sweet sixteen or, in more affluent communities, a debutante ball at the age of eighteen.

At a quinceañera the party girl is accompanied by her relatives and friends. They join her for a religious ceremony and then for the party. The party usually starts when the quinceañera enters the room by walking arm-in-arm with her father, or she goes down a set of stairs while her chosen song plays in the background. At the bottom, she meets with her father and they first dance to a waltz then she dances with her male relatives or friends. Then, she may dance with her boyfriend ("novio") if she has one. She may also do the flower and candle ritual. She may also take to the Cuban type as well. 15 chambelanes await at the bottom of some stairs with a rose or flower and they do the traditional "Quince" dances.

Then the birthday girl can dance or sing to entertain her guests (this is optional). After eating, the modern music plays and there's a "Carnaval Carioca." that is what the tradition is in the country of Puerto Rico. Sometimes the party may go well into the late night and in to the next day.

I've been to a quince before, I have a decent amount of Latina friends.
