  1. The post above is true but it's too dark!

There is a lot of personal freedom going in compounds, and that is why compounds were created in the first place, to provide a safe environment for expatriates and to prevent collision of foreign culture with local culture.

  2. Saudi Arabia is a very strict police state country...Since MECCA is based in Saudi Arabia that's why the country remains conservative...

    (1) women are not allowed to go out the public area without

         wearing the "ABAYAT" (black dress)...

    (2) Man & Woman are not allowed to go out publicly if not

         married

    (3) NO pork chops at all and Alcohol

    (4) No sense of freedom at all...

    (5) No bars, no night life....

    (6) Not allowed to gamble or play cards (some of the police they raid the houses who has illegal gamblings

    (7) Not allowed to bring "Cruxifix, Saints photos or Mama Mary, Jesus"

    (8) No catholic churches in Saudi (some of the christians they do ritual inside their house (some get caught and brought to jail).

    (9) cannot date publicly to an opposite s*x (police will ask for your marriage license).

    (10) bad life....no sense of freedom, really...

  3. Yes theres a bomb going off everyday. We got used to it.

    Kidding..

its totally normal and safe.... just dont forget to visit Al Baik resturant in Jeddah and try their spicy chicken....

Jeddah especially is very,  very liberal compared to other places in Saudi...

Theres many living the lifestyles of the rich, many average people, and some poor as well....

  4. .......Don't worry, Jeddah is safe just like any other cities in Saudi Arabia. There is no gulf war going on right now and if there is, Saudi Arabia would not get itself involved on those wars. You maybe heard some news before of bomb treats but they were history. Now, people are safe because security is very tight here even in highways there are patrol cars roaming 24/7 in major highways.......life is simple here but you can manage to spend your time having fun with friends or family.......

  5. Lucky you... Wish I could relocate to Saudi...

  6. if you read through the saudi forum here, you'll find this question seems to be asked weekly or more so..

Dont worry about relocating here to Saudi.. Its just fine, We dont have bombings daily.. In fact  you more apt to be hit by crime living in USA than here.. Crime is incrediably low here. Life is normal as in everyone wants to go about their day just making a living for their family.. Social activities might not be what you want. We dont have bars, clubs, theaters, public swimming pools (outside the private living compounds). But you can go to picnics, exploring the deserts, the historical sites, shopping the old markets called souks, talking to elders, visiting old villages. etc.. life to be exciting is how you make it... People generally here are friendly towards foreigners. and they are generous. you'll find if you are friendly yourself, you probably will get many invites to eat dinner or take tea somewhere... A man wont get to see the women of the household, they dont mix, but you will be generously hosted in the male visitor quarters of their house to many good foods and such.. You might find it odd to get used to the manner of dress here, the white flowing shirt called a thobe that the men wear.. and the black cover cloak the women wear.. it seems odd at first, but you get used to it.  clothing is fairly reasonable here.. Cheaper than in USA if you look for off brands.. We import from USA and Europe and those fashions can be more costly.. Our malls are plenty and there are so many vast different stores, your head will swim. A shoppers paradice. Gasoline here is still cheap. produce in groceries is still very affordable compared to outside. We ourselves are experiencing a price hike in everything, but comparable its still cheaper than outside. .. the climate is hot and humid in the coastal cities.. Jeddah being on the coast, it will get hot and humid during the summer. sometimes up to 120F or maybe more rarely.. Winters are nice.. they are our spring.. it averages around 50F and nice calm breezy during winters..

If you come with an open mind and be social and talk to the group you work with. you will enjoy your experience here

    Welcome! ^-^
