  1. I've worked in construction for almost 30 years and used every brand out there.  I own a Ryobi and a Dewalt at the moment -- I recommend the Dewalt, hands down.  Perfect balance of speed, torque and control and the batteries recharge quickly and hold their charge well.  Also quiet and very ergonomic, too -- that drill is like an extension of my body when I use it -- the ideal tool whether you are driving deck screws or drilling through a 2 x 4 with a hole saw!  The Ryobi is compact and handy for tight spaces but the torque is poor and the clutch tends to slip.  Absolutely do NOT waste your money on Craftsman or Black and Decker products of any type, including their so-called "Professional" series.  Junk.

If my house was on fire and I only had time to grab 3 things on my way out the door, my Dewalt 18v drill/driver would be the first thing I would grab (and I'm a girl!)

Come to think of it, if my Dewalt was a guy, I'd marry him!  So maybe you'd risk having your gf prefer the drill to you :-)

PS  The Dewalt was actually a Valentine's gift from my boyfriend (a professional contractor) 9 years ago.  Dumped him, but still love the drill!

  2. Course the more money you pay, usually the better the drill.

We use Dewalt for our construction company. However, at home I have a craftsman and it works fine for my lighter use.

  3. a real good brand of tools is craftman.

  4. I agree, at my shop we have all DeWalt,.. 2-12v .. 2-18v driver/drills the reciprcating ..the circular/saw..   DeWalt  is 2'nd to none... HOWEVER...that 18v drill (the heavy duty model) IS  HEAVY ,  I find myself going for 12v most of the time.....The thing is,,the new models are coming out with new battery technology .. mostly called LITHIUM ION .. DeWalt calls their's NANO Technology ... Realize that any Professional tool cost Big Bucks..And I agree... at home I own a Crapsman 12v ..you just can't beat the price.  BUT... when that one dies.. ( I might even drop it off a ladder .. again)

I 'm definetly going to look at the New RYOBI cordless KIT with the new LITHIUM ION BATTERY.. Again .. for the average homeowner.. the quality isn't bad and you can't beat the price......(over $800 for DeWalt vs a couple of hundred for Ryobi or Crapsman .. sorry i did it again... I meant Craftsman

  5. The weight comes from the battery. This is why I recommend the LITHIUM BATTERY drills. Dewalt, Craftsman, Bosch, Ryobi, Milwauke to name a few makers. I have the new 32 volt Dewalt lithium and it is as light as my old 8 volt Craftsman. Lithium batteries also last longer.
