  1. You might actually like some of Studs Terkel's oral biographies because they are the voices of real people talking about what they went through during various times in history. Hard Times is about the Great Depression and The Good War is about WW II.

There's a novel by E.L.Doctorow called Ragtime that is about the time leading up to the Great Depression. I read it when I was pretty young and liked it quite a bit. There is also always The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. You'll read it eventually and it's a great book.

Marge Piercy has a novel called Gone to Soldiers that is  about WW II. It's long, but it's really interesting and it has romance and everything so it doesn't feel like a history book.

She has another named Vida that is about a woman who got in trouble in the anti-war movement in the sixties and went underground. See what your teacher thinks of that one.

Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried or If I Die In a Combat Zone are both very good fictional accounts of Viet Nam. Perhaps Bobbie Ann Mason's In Country would also qualify. You might  like that one, again, check with your teacher and see if it would work.

Crossing Blood by Nancy Kincaid is a very good novel about the civil rights movement, from a personal point of view. James Baldwin's Blues for Mister Charlie is a play but it should still qualify for your assignment. It also deals with civil rights. Toni Morrison's Bluest Eye or Song of Solomon would also be worth checking into.

I hope you find something useful here. Don't sound so depressed! You might actually like some of these books!

    Good luck.

  2. Founding Brothers.

  3. I'm afraid I can't really help you with the fiction side of things (although I'd be very interested to see what others come up with so I shall be checking back here!).

For my history course I've found the linked book is best for facts. it's very simple and explains lots of questions you may have. It also covers your required date-frame.

    Good luck!

  4. What about Watergate?  Or the Assassination of JFK, William McKinley, or James Garfield.  What about getting a book about US participation in either fo the World Wars?  A good Fictional book based on the depression is Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck.  Good luck!
