I just got some blood taken for a routine test, and the nurse said that my liver enzymes are elevated. What does this mean? Can this indicate the presence of an STD? Can the enzyme levels be affected by testosterone? What are some possible explanations for these elevated enzyme levels? I would just like these questions answered before they take more blood and do more tests.

  1. Try WebMD.com.

  2. STDs have the least chance.Most common are infection,alcohol, drugs etc.

  3. From Mayo Clinic:

    "Common causes of elevated liver enzymes include:

        * Side effect of medication, such as certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cholesterol medications, antibiotics or anti-seizure medications

        * Drinking alcohol

        * Obesity

        * Diabetes

        * Elevated triglycerides

        * Infection, such as viral hepatitis and mononucleosis

        * Autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts, such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis or primary biliary cirrhosis

        * Metabolic liver disease, such as hemochromatosis or Wilson's disease

        * Excessive use of certain herbal supplements, such as kava, comfrey, pennyroyal or skullcap

        * Gallstones

        * Tumors of the liver, pancreas or bile ducts"

    It's usually nothing (depending on how high the enzymes are) serious, and may just reflect the fact that you had a few drinks a while ago.

    It's not an STD, unless someone you slept with gave you hepatitis.

  4. It could be a # of things.

    Alcohol can make it go up, fatty foods, your gallbladder, being dehydrated.
