  1. Go for something with gears. Mountain bikes don't necessarily have to have gears as 'single speeds' are quite in vogue for many mountain bikers.

I'll second the "put slicks on it" comment, as that'll make the ride a lot easier.

You can also get a cyclocross bike (bearings are usually sealed pretty good for the elements, like a mountain bike), but you can put some pretty wide tires on there.

Anyway, go with gears if it's hilly and you don't like pain.

  2. MTB for sure, but consider a something a little better than a walmart bike.  A better but used bike for the same price will be about 10 times better.

  3. Having only a single speed and usually a very low seat, BMX bikes aren't designed for long rides or hills.  BMX bikes are designed for out of the saddle, short, sprints.

Thus, I'd get the mountain bike.  If all of your riding is on paved surfaces, you might want to get some slick, "city" type tires.  This will make the bike faster and easier to pedal.

    Hope this helps.

  4. If you dont BMX the mountain Bike is much better. Its much better as i comes with extras.Hills are a pain for BMX and are probably easier to walk up but with a mountain you can just change gears and move up. So yea the mountain bike would be much easier for commuting.

  5. mountain bikes are better they have 21 speeds gears that is like 3 in frout and 7 to 8 ijn back

  6. BMX is the worst choice for commuting - more so in a hilly area. As for the cool factor, I never see BMX at college, they all left 'em back at middle school.
