OK, I'm about 5 foot 10 inches tall and weigh approx. 195. now i have some muscle on me so i don't think its all fat. but my doc has this thing where he inputs my height and weight into a computer program and it tells me if i am below average, average, overweight, or obese and it put me down as overweight and that made me feel really conscious about my weight but i know that thing doesn't accumulate for muscle but that still doesn't make me feel better cause i dont know how much muscle i actually have on me. should i still feel self-conscious or do i have nothing to worry about? and does anyone know any good supplements or anything?

  1. I think that if you like what you see in the mirror and feel ok (healthwise) in yourself - then unless your doctor says you have high blood pressure or some other cardio-vascular ailment that might benefit from losing some weight then don't worry about it ..... as you say muscle weighs more and this should be taken into a account .... I think you might find more and better answers if you went to a gym and spoke to an instructor - these people have knowledge and experience of weight issues relating to the amount of muscle you have on your body because they work with the body and muscles every day - in some ways they are more informed that doctors .....  I also think that a computer is not the be all and end all .... I am 5ft 2in and (at the time I weighed approx 8.5 stones .... but my doctor kept telling me I was too fat and to lose a stone .... if I had done that (which I have now because I have a thyroid condition) I would have looked like a stick insect..... yet she was going by the 'statistics' .... statistics are just that - numbers - a good doctor will translate numbers into something that is personalised to you ..... no-one fits the 'stereotype' perfectly - and no-one should.....

  2. if you are the athletic type, and have muscle, a good doctor should be able to look at your constitution and not just rely on some calculus that can vary from person to person.

just keep a healthy diet, and exercise, or continue doing whatever sports you've been doing till now... and you'll be healthy.

  3. not to worry ......... r u comfortable.... can u still walk up the stairs ..... does everything work right... liver kidneys lungs brain tummy......... then dont let him worry u ...... or make u self conscience

  4. Relax.................My husband has the same problem.  He is 6' tall and weighs about 200 pounds.  We go to the gym regularly.  He walks from 3 - 6 miles every day, has a 32 inch waist, and biceps and triceps like Superman!  People regularly mistake his age for at least 10 years younger than what he is.  We usually eat right, because I am always watching my weight, but he can eat a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting, and it never seems to stick anywhere!  It makes me so mad, as I'm eating my sugar free jello, but, anyway, every time the dr puts his 'info' into the computer, it tells him my husband is obese!!!!! So, just realize that the BMI is a 'guide' and not a 'definite'.  Society is very 'fat conscious' right now.  So, if the numbers don't add up right....................  Good Luck!
