  1. "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe

    "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

    "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde

    Each of the central characters in each of these books are so consumed by their ambitions that they're willing to resort to violence & deception to achieve their goals. Ultimately, it leads to their downfall.

    I would personally choose the picture of Dorian Gray. Very good book.


  2. My first thought is "The Sound and the Fury" by Faulkner.

    Or you could just read any non-fiction account of the Clinton presidency ;)
