I need a california drivers license or id ?

If i only have my social security number with a not valid for work on the card, can i get an id or a drivers license?

  1. I'm pretty sure you need further proof of identity, like your birth certificate.


  2. in california you must show a birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence to get a drivers license or i d card. why is your ss card not valid for work? are you not from the u.s.?

Your going to need your passport as well to get one but yes you can use that to go get an ID card and possibly the driver's license (once you pass the tests of course).  Since your not from here the DMV may require more information on you to prove you are who you say you are.  Get online and look up California Department of Motor Vehicles and they should list in there what you will need in order to get either an ID or license.  That way you can be prepared before you go there and not waste more than one day standing in line.
