You did not tell us your budget.

If you are staying on the beach, then a waterproof housing is not needed.

MiniDV tape will provide the best available video quality.

The Sony HDR-HC9 is good with a 20x zoom, but you may need more than that. Sony also has a 1.7x zoom

If you want to stay in standard definition (and still do widescreen), take a look at the Canon ZR950. 37x zoom and no extra tele-lens required.

Both cameras are miniDV tape based and will connect to your Mac's Firewire400 port with a firewire (IEEE1394a, i.Link) 4-pin to 6-pin cable (that is not included in the box so you have to buy it separately. iMovieHD 5 or newer  or Final Cut Express or Pro is required for high definition (HDV) import and editing). Since this is not AVCHD compressed (typically found on hard drive and flash memory cams), AVCHD compatibility is not required.

almost all digital video cameras are compatible with mac. if it's a recognised brand name then it'll work.

look for a cam that uses mini dv. still the best compared to HDD and flash type cams. sony make a selction of HDV cams that a waterproof case is available for.

the are expensive but will give you great shoots in hi definition and are light and easy to use.

try looking at HDR-HC9
