I inherited a set of Taylormade Firesole irons and need to add a driver and putter to get me started. I have only played golf sporadically for the last 10 years(not enough to know that much about good brands) but want to start again more consistently.

I have $175.00 in visa gift cards so I may be limited to retailers. Any recommendations on the best putter and driver I can get for $175.00, I can even throw in $25.00 myself to make it an even $200 that I can spend

  1. You can pick up a Great new driver for around $150 like the Cleveland Hibore or the Taylormade R5.  The prices are lower now because these drivers came out in 2006, but are still great clubs.  If you are going to buy in a store just try the putters out and see which one you like best, there are lots under $40

  2. OK, so I will go out on the ledge on this one....

1 - Head over to Play It Again Sports, check out your local garage sales, Craigs List, etc., and get any putter that just feels good in your hands.

    2 - DO NOT BUY A DRIVER.

If you feel you just have to have a 'driver', get a nice 3 wood as this will be much easier to learn to hit than a driver.

3 - Use the remaining money to buy a series of beginner group lessons.   OR

3 - Use the remaining money to buy a set of discount range cards so you can buy as much ammo as you can cheaply to teach yourself how to swing.

BTW - check into my prior answers on how to 'learn the game'.  I posted a few idea on how to practice and learn prior to your first round on the grass.  Good book(s) to read include Golf For Dummies & Golf By Design.  The first is really good and was written by Gary McCord (ex PGA pro), and the second will teach you about the anatomy of a golf course, course management, etc.  This was written by Robert Trent Jones Jr, one of the icons of course design.

  3. Your budget will limit you quite a bit (new drivers run about $300-$400).  But there is a ton of used equipment available and if buy used and decided you don't like the club most retailers will give you full credit to exchange for something else.  Try the big stores like Golf Galaxy if you have one near you - they have a big selection of used clubs.

that will leave you with $30.

I may upgrade to:  (it will put you $20 over.)

The driver is great for $150 new!!!!

If you buy used, form a pro-shop or golf retail store, you have tons of choices

    Good luck!

  5. Try to find a new nike driver. Long, straight and around $200.

  6. Buy clubs you feel comfortable swinging, name brand does not matter. I have swung $25 Ram putters that are more comfortable to use that an $150 odyssey putter. As for a Driver, I would hold off and buy a three wood. You will get more control and accuracy with a three wood than a driver. Don't forget to look at a hybrid, it is always good to have if you are not strong player with your long irons.

  7. Go to "www.rockbottomgolf.com" they have the best prices I have ever seen.

  8. Try the golf warehouse(tgw.com).  They had a killer deal going over the Thanksgiving holiday.  I hit them up for 175 bucks worth of stuff.  Always try ebay, but I would all ready know what I want to get as opposed to trying something new.

  9. wait till spring when the new clubs come out and go to ***** and buy last years models at a much lower price

  10. go to golf galaxy or golf smith and look at the used department they have a good selection of name brands and prices are great but also you can return them for a full store credit or exchange them for another driver and putter
