Question:

I need a faster arm swing. How can I train it?

I am a good volleyball player and I know the sport, but I don't know as much about physical training.

So could you answer me in one of two ways...

1. Tell me what exercise you have found to work from exp.

2. Tell me what muscles are involved in the swing and how to train them for power.

  1. Unless you have extra-ordinarily weak arm muscles, you really want to work on FORM.

    When you are attacking the ball, it's a combination of your whole body that iis critical to a hard or fast hit.  You are using your legs, hips, lower back, shoulders, elbows, and wrist and not simply focuisng on just your arm speed.

    If you are looking to attack harder, consider working out all of these areas and playing more.

    Lastly, you are not looking to train for power.  You are looking to train for speed.  A volleyball weights a less than 10 oz.  You don't have to be strong to hit it very hard.


  2. Do you know handball???  The way I practice by fast swing is I grab a volleyball and go hit hte ball to hte wall.  the ball shuold come back faster toward you so you should not only hit the ball faster, but harder!!!

  4. This is a very good question. I have trained a lot with volleyball and there's one really good exerise you can do. Take a basketball or a really heavy ball, that weighs a lot more than a volleyball. I will say 8 or 9lbs. Have someone throw it up and serve. Do this numerous times. You will feel your muscal in you upper arm getting tired. You can do this about 10 minutes a day and you will get a fast swing in your spike, or serve.

  6. My JO's coach tells us to practice getting a faster arm swing by throwing baseballs and softballs. Get with a partner and throw the ball as hard and as fast as you can. Do this every day and you'll see improvement if you keep it up.

  7. a great way to get a faster arm swing is, ummm i dont know what they are called but they have these balls that wiegh about 4punds and you hold the stick and practice your arm swing. because you are doing it with so much weight, when you try to swing with a lighter ball, you will swing much faster. also, dont forget 2 snap ur wrist!

You can use surgical bands to work on your arm swing....sit in a chair and place the band behind you in a door way or somewhere in your house where you can put your arm above your head and bring it forward (out in front of you) Your arm should start at a 90 degree angle and should end straight out in front of your chest. This will simulate the arm swing and help with some speed.

  10. The best thing you can do is practice on it whenever you can. Then later it will come to you and you will be a PRO!

  11. some people swing there arm really fast some times to get it used to it. then they go outside and work on it try harder
