  3. I'm sorry to hear about your mother.  Sylvia is a pretty middle name.  Since the accent is on the first syllable, it's not the easiest name to come up with melodic combinations for.  I would avoid any other names that end in the -a sound (like Emma or Mia).  I would also avoid any three-syllable names that are stressed on the first syllable (like Emily Sylvia or Madeline Sylvia), as they sound a bit monotonous.

Two-syllable names that are stressed on the first syllable sound the best to me.  I especially like those that end in a consonant sound, like Charlotte Sylvia and Katherine Sylvia.  Ones that end in a vowel sound are okay, too, as long as the vowel isn't -a.  Here are examples.  Try these with your last name to see if you like the rhythm.

    Katherine Sylvia

    Caitlyn Sylvia

    Megan Sylvia

    Charlotte Sylvia

    Jasmine Sylvia

    Roisin Sylvia (ROSH-een)

    Maren Sylvia

    Tamsin Sylvia

    Regan Sylvia

    Arden Sylvia

    Eden Sylvia

    Aisling Sylvia (ASH-ling)

    Margaret Sylvia

    Carmen Sylvia

    Erin Sylvia

    Gretchen Sylvia

    Ruby Sylvia

    Daphne Sylvia

    Chloe Sylvia

My second favorite combination type is a three-syllable name that is stressed on the middle syllable.  There aren't many of these that DON'T end in -a, but here are a few I've found:

    Naomi Sylvia

    Delaney Sylvia

    Rhiannon Sylvia

    Imani Sylvia

    Leilani Sylvia

    Evandne Sylvia (ee-VAD-nee)

One-syllable names also work well, as long as they don't end in an "s" or "z" sound.  Here are a few I like:

    Anne Sylvia

    Claire Sylvia

    Eve Sylvia

    Jane Sylvia

    Gwen Sylvia

    Hope Sylvia

    Maeve Sylvia

    Brynn Sylvia

Another type of first name that works, though I don't think it's quite as ideal, is a two-syllable name stressed on the second syllable, like Adele, Marie, or Nicole.  Try these with your last name to see how you like them.  I prefer the combinations above, but it's all about what you like best:

    Adele Sylvia

    Nicole Sylvia

    Marie Sylvia

    Corinne Sylvia

    Elise Sylvia

    Noelle Sylvia

    Yasmeen Sylvia

Finally, if you like longer names, I think a four-syllable name with the stress on the second syllable work, though these don't sound quite as good to me as the other combos:

    Elizabeth Sylvia

    Evangeline Sylvia

    Felicity Sylvia

    Penelope Sylvia

There are, of course, much more important things than how a name flows.  Choosing to honor a cherished relative is one of those things.  If you find a first name you love that doesn't *quite* fit with Sylvia, by all means use it.  Most people won't know your daughter's middle name anyway.  As long as the name doesn't sound completely ridiculous (Olivia Sylvia is pretty bad, for example), then it will be just fine.

    Best wishes, and congratulations!

  9. Well if I were to have my daughter's middle name be Sylvia, I would name her first name Naomi or Victoria. You should really try to name your baby based on what name goes best with the middle and last names, because some names may not fit. I have a friend whose first and middle name's were Stefanie Brittany, and her last name did not go good at all. Just be careful and don't rush with it. Congratulations!
