I want a fish that:

can survive cold weather

can survive the pond freezing on the top

is compatible with coy, carp, and gold fish.(1 foot long)

will not eat baby fish.(no bass or sunfish)

I was thinking a yellow or brown bull catfish cause i can catch them at are near by river but people tell me they will eat the babies. also any kind of pleco that will survive the weather.

any suggestions.

THANX!

  1. Plecos are tropical and will not survive freezing.  They are all native to South America.  Even the fish you already have are likely to eat fry.  So there is no fish that will meet all your requirements.  If you want the bull catfish, get it.

  2. I would buy some red tail cafish and arowanas. arowanas are pricey ranging from 40-100 dollars for a silver arowana. most arowanas are rare and cost from 500-1000 dollars but the arowana only eats things that fit in its mouth

  3. I suggest a bullhead catfish (is that what you mean by bull catfish?). We had one that I caught when I was younger in a creek and it grew up with a goldfish smaller than it and babies that it never harmed. Then we moved it as it grew too big for our pond into another pond (different location) with other catfish, a large goldfish, bass, bluegills, carp and sunfish. Still today he visits us at the side of the pond when we feed them bread :)

Pleco's won't survive in an outdoor pond during winter, they need temps. between 72*F and 82*F all year round.

    Hope this helped!
