I need a geometry expert. If I have an apple pie, how do I slice it into 5 equal pieces?

I know how to slice into 6 obviously, but I would like to know if there is a formula I can use based off of said pie's diameter to to have 5 equal size pieces. I remember a good deal of high school geometry, I just need help dividing a a known circumference into five parts. Thanks!

  1. The most practical is to use a protractor to measure sectors of 360/5 = 72 degrees.  The circumference is π d so you could calculate the circumference, divide it by five, and use a string to measure that distance around the perimeter.  Or you could use trigonometry to calculate relevant distances if you don't have a protractor.

  2. Can't you divide the circumference by five and then measure then mark the pie at those points and slice toward the exact center? Why wouldn't that work?

  3. Without actually getting out your protractor and measuring off five 72 degree areas, there is no way to divide a pie into 5 equal parts.  That's like trying to tri-sect an angle!  It's impossible to do.

  4. Inscribe a pentagon, and at each point of the pentagon draw a line to the center of the 'pie', or the angle of each slice will be 360/5=72 deg
