Question:

I need a good .308 rifle?

I am in need of a new rifle for the season, and I am thinking about the .308 for an all arounder.

Please suggest some guns that are the best bang for the buck. I am not trying to go all out, just logical that gets the job done as it should. I don't want low quality either.

  1. FN FAL, or a Springfield Armory SOCOM 16.

  2. You will be hard pressed to find a better gun for the money than a Savage.  The fit and finish is not top of the line but the part that counts, accuracy and durability, are there in spades.  My next choice for accuracy right out of the box would be a Remington 700.  I think the varmint specials are still available in .308.  The Sendero surely is.  Both have heavy barrels can be a  bit of a burden if you are carrying them a long distance but if you are hunting from a blind, they are tops.  My favorite is a Remington 700 VSS in .308.  I have taken a lot of deer with it.

  3. Another vote for the Remmy 700

  4. The Remington 700 VTR is nice.... I have one of those chambered in .308 topped off with a Nikon scope....  The nice thing about this rifle is when your not hunting its a great target rifle... Why? - The ammo is cheap... Any other cartridge besides the .223 is going to cost $20 a box on up for ammo....

So the .308 is a good choice. The remington is a decent choice. Sure theres nicer rifles if you want to cough up more money but I find mine decently accurate, fun to shoot and excellent for deer.....

I got mine on sale for about $600.......

The regular Remington SPS Varmint is also a good choice and less expensive.....

  5. I am a fan of Remington, they have good prices and the quality of the firearms are good.Get a scope mounted on it and site it and will kill many big game animals.

  6. Remington or Savage Brand are your two (2*) best choices.*

  7. pick your poison... Remington Browning Savage CZ Winchester etc etc et al all make good .308's in a variety of actions.

enjoy your shopping... New or used there is plenty to look at out there

  8. if you are looking for a Bolt take a look at the Ruger M77.. Of the bolt actions I've had and sold, the M77 has a very smooth action and priced comparatively to Remington..

If you are on a Old Milwaukee/Blatz vs a Michelob budget take a look at the H&R/New England SB Single shot.

  9. Savage Stevens 200, Marlin XL7, Savage 10F,  Remington 700 SPS, Weatherby Vanguard.... Least to most expensive in that order.   All are good basic rifles with good accuracy out of the box.  The SPS and Vanguard are close in price and both are good offerings with the Vanguard having a slight accuracy edge which varies from each individual rifle to the other.  You need to inspect the factory test target which comes with each rifle in the box.  Stores should let you inspect them before making a purchase decision.

I am not a fan of the Remington710/ 770 and the  Mossberg 4x4.

  10. To take advantage of the inherent accuracy of the .308, and to stay true to your "bang for the buck" requirement, I'd suggest one of the synthetic stocked bolt actions.

Remington comes to mind first. They have many different models, but the Model 700 SPS is entry-level priced while still remaining a high quality weapon.

Weatherby also makes a similarly priced synthetic bolt action in their Vanguard series, but I am not familiar with it so I don't feel comfortable offering an opinion.

If you're not already married to the .308, I would urge you to consider the .30-06. Despite the Ford-Chevy-Dodge debates of rifle cartridges, few if any shooters will ever have a situation where the .308 is better or worse than the .30-06. They are both great "all-arounders". The reason I suggest it is that the .30-06 still remains the most popular cartridge for North American big game hunting, and, as such, is offered in more rifles.  There are many price-point manufacturers that offer .30-06 bolt actions but do not carry the same gun in .308 (Marlin, Mossberg, etc.).

    Good luck in your search.

  11. Tough to beat a Remington 700.
