I need a good experiment to do with a chemistry set

Question

I have two chemistry sets and i don't want to follow the booklet, I already know about chemistry and about safety precautions. I just want to make something that could actually be of some use. So if you could just rattle off things i could make and list the elements/compounds and materials i need?

ex: potassium and glucose = possible rocket fuel

I'm not sure how many of these can be done with chemicals from a chemistry set but most seem simple enough. Quite a few of these result in explosions/fire (like the exploding paste about 1/3 of the way down page 3) or require liquid nitrogen/dry ice so you might want to be careful. The homopolar motor seems pretty innocuous so it seems like a good one to try.
