“You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by 'I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.' Hungry not only for bread -- but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing -- but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks -- but homeless because of rejection.” – Mother Teresa

“If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” – Mother Teresa

”We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” – Mother Teresa

“We would never imagine how great the happiness we would get was by giving it to others first.” – mrg 04

“I do not have the strength to change the whole world, but like everybody else, I have the strength to change the smallest part of the world to a better one and I will never stop trying to take this chance.” – mrg 04

  3. Margaret Mead:

Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

    Marianne Williamson:

In every community there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart there is the power to do it.

  4. John D. Rockefeller Jr.:

Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege.

It is every man's obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.

    Anne Frank:

No one has ever become poor by giving.

  5. I can't find the exact quote or the author, unfortunately.

But somebody has pointed out that subjectively, as far as your own mental state is concerned, you're "wealthy" when you have enough to give away.  You're "poor" when you have so little that you feel you need to keep it all for yourself.

Therefore the person with little wealth or income who feels able to give some of it away is better off than the person with millions in the bank who feels the need to hold on to every penny.

You might check the philosopher Alan Watts for this idea.  I think he said it much better than I can.
