  1. click on START select RUN type in CHKDSK /R /F

it will pop up a screen saying

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another

process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be

checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

hit Y then enter the box will go away

    restart

it will say a scan has been scheduled and give you the option to skip it

when it start it should be on stage 1 of 5 if it does not start or just says 1 of 3 you will need to try again

now this will probably take some time depending on how big you HD is or how bad it is.

Generally about an hour for every 100 -150 GIGs

Stage 1 -3 are program related and will be done in 5-10 min

stages 4 and 5 are checking the physical structure of the disk

now once it is done and windows is loaded again check the results

    open ctrl panel

    click on admin tool

    event viewer

    click on application

then clcik the source column to sort it and find the entry WINLOGON there may be more then one but they are dated and timed so find the one closets to the time that the scan started double click it

    it will look like this

Windows will now check the disk.

Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.

Cleaning up 7 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.

Cleaning up 7 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.

Cleaning up 7 unused security descriptors.

    CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...

    Usn Journal verification completed.

Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.

Windows has made corrections to the file system.

    151123423 KB total disk space.

      99098772 KB in 83241 files.

         38124 KB in 7133 indexes.

             0 KB in bad sectors.

245139 KB in use by the system.

65536 KB occupied by the log file.

      51741388 KB available on disk..

as long as it says 0k in bad sector your HD should not be phyically damaged
