There are 2 major rule: no dangerous play. This is the ref's decision as to when someone is to be sent off, etc. This includes high tackles (i.e. neck/face) and tripping (putting your hand out to grab them isn't considered tripping by most people).

The other major rule, is that the atacking tem must never have a player in front of the ball carrier (hence the backwards passes).

From a penalty, the defending team must retreat 10 metres. If a player takes a quick penaltie and runs into a defending player before 10 metres, another penalty is awarded.

watch it at a pub. Ask whats going on and itll make sense (most players dont know all the rules, same for most supporters, so dont worry)
