I've been doing needlework (embroidery, hand sewing, needlepoint, etc) for over 30 years now.  

I'm a fiddler, and it keeps my hands busy!  I can also have several projects on the go for whatever mood I'm in, and you can stitch and chat or watch TV at the same time.

My favorite quote about sewing actually comes from the David Eddings character "Polgara" (can't remember which book) where she says that "sewing keeps the hands busy and lets the mind work".

The tools are inexpensive and you can let your imagination run riot - as well as having some thing practical at the end!

take a trip to your local craft store and wander around. they have books you can flip through to get some ideas and isles full of fun crafts!

Go to your local hobby shop (Hobby Lobby, etc.) and see what kind of classes they have scheduled.  You may see something that appeals to you.

How about candle making? Candle making is not really that hard, but you do have to be cautious (making candles involves high temperatures, flammable substances, and potentially harmful chemicals). The beginner should start with container candles (usually in tins or glass jars) as this will get you some experience working with waxes, wicks, dyes, and scents. Note that there are many different types of waxes (container, pillar, soy, gel) and scents (not all are all safe together). I would recommend that you look at some of the sites I provided links to, take a lesson, or buy an introduction book/video. There is a lot of good and bad information out there, please use caution.
