i use acrylic, or tattoo ink, or spraypaint. if oil didn't take so long to dry, it would work fine too. the thing about acylic and acrylic or latex based paints is that it dries into a plastic, which will peel off after so many washes and wears. The flatness of spraypaint stays on really well, it's like using an airbrush...but out of a can. and tattoo ink stains...you will never get it out, it works really well, but sucks when it's spilt on anything else. it's just getting control of it that might be a problem.

You can use acrylic craft paints, but they can crack and peel over time. Adding a bit of textile medium, which is made by the same companies that make the paint, makes the paint flexable so that it doesn't crack. I like Delta brand textile medium, because you can use a very small amount so the bottle goes a long way. It says to iron it to help set it, but thrwing it in the dryer works, too.

Acrylic craft paint is really inexpensive and you can buy it in large quantities.

I use a product called "textile medium", but I do not know the brand name. It gives acrylic paint thinness and flexibility when used on fabrics. I wear a jacket that I "monogramed" that way 15 years ago, and the lettering is still crisp and clear!  I think I got it at walmart, or target or some shop like that! Good luck!

It depends on what you are going to paint. Acrylic paint works for fabric and you can buy it in larger bottles. You don't even need to heat set it. Just let it dry for 24+ hours and clothing can be washed and dried with no problems.  I use it to paint shirts with the kids in my Vacation Bible School every year.
