  1. Hiring a lawyer for minor legal problems can be expensive, but there are websites like LawGuru, FindLaw and other places where you can get free legal advice. I found this website useful - http://www.uelp.org/freelegal.html

  2. I am assuming that you mean your son has been turned down for schools. Anyway, whatever he has been turned down for it is illegal. Contact the Disability Discrimination Act, your local council should be able to give you a contact number. I would doubt that it would be yourself personally that would have to provide a solicitor. Before you go down that route it may save you a lot of stress if you first inform the providers that this will be your intention if your son is not given a place. When i say providers I refer to your Local Education Authority. I hope this is of some help you.

  3. Try wrightslaw.com's yellow pages for your state.

  4. If you are talking about a public school denying access to facilities, then you should consult your Procedural Safeguards book that is given to you at each IEP meeting. It will tell you exactly what to do if you disagree with the school district's placement. In the early stages, you will not need a lawyer if you follow the steps outlined in it.

Bear in mind that a child's placement in special education is governed by the Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2004 (IDEA). In that law is a requirement that a child be placed in the least restrictive environment (LRE). That pretty much guides what a school district is going to do.

The issue you are bring up is another part of IDEA which is the guideline that requires a "free and appropriate public education (FAPE)." What you are saying is that the placement is not appropriate to meet your son's needs. You must gather proof that this is the case. Find everything you can that supports your case. This can include evidence of a lack of progress in the areas of life skills learning, language development and behavior.

The best place to find out more about these issues is the Wright's Law website.
